Snow Storm Causes 59 Vehicle Pile Up on I-80

How can Pennsylvania drivers protect themselves while driving in winter weather conditions?

A snowstorm recently shut down Interstate-80 in Jefferson County following a 59 vehicle pileup.  Icy and snowy conditions with low visibility were thought to contribute to the massive multiple vehicle accident.  More than a dozen vehicles were crushed in the wrecks, which involved 22 tractor trailers and 37 cars.  Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.  Emergency responders worked quickly to clean up the roadway and put out a truck fire, allowing I-80 to reopen several hours later.

Pennsylvania and much of the United States is bracing for a harsh winter.  As temperatures drop and slick conditions move in, there are steps you can take to stay safe while driving during the winter months.  Follow these tips below to protect you and your family this winter.

Prepare Your Car

The first thing you can do is prep your vehicle for winter weather.  This includes ensuring your vehicle is in good working order and has tires with plenty of tread, or snow tires if needed in your area.  Be sure all fluids are topped off and windshield wipers are in good condition.  Stock some essentials in your vehicle, such as an ice scraper, water, a snow shovel, and salt. 

Use Caution
